Summary: John Erb built a flour mill in 1807 at the best water power site where there was room for growth on the south bank of the Speed River. His son took over the mill and laid out the village of Preston. The Cambridge mill is “the oldest place of continuing business in Waterloo County?- so reads the plaque placed at the mill by the Waterloo Historical Society in 1928.
